São Martinho on the Water
There's a Portuguese saying for the little spell of warm, bright weather that so often arrives in mid-November: o verão de São Martinho — St Martin's summer. It lands right when the vines have been picked and the year's new wine is ready to taste, and Porto marks it the way it marks most good things: outdoors, with friends, over roasted chestnuts and a glass in hand. It's one of our favourite moments to be out on the river.
The story behind the day
São Martinho — St Martin's Day, 11 November — remembers Martin of Tours, the Roman soldier who cut his cloak in two to share it with a beggar in the cold. Legend says the clouds parted and summer briefly returned to reward his kindness, and that warm snap still carries his name today. In Portugal the day belongs to the magusto: a gathering around a fire of roasting chestnuts, with jeropiga and água-pé — sweet young wines — and plenty of laughter. In 2026, São Martinho falls on Wednesday 11 November, with magustos across the city in the days around it.
Chestnuts, jeropiga and the new wine
The flavours are simple and unmistakable. Castanhas assadas — chestnuts blistered black over coals, peeled hot and burning your fingers. Jeropiga, the sweet fortified must that tastes of the harvest. And the first wine of the year, still young and lively. It's the north's quiet counterpoint to all the aged Tawny in the Gaia cellars: where Port is patience, São Martinho is the fresh start of the cycle that makes it.
How we mark it on deck
A São Martinho sail is an autumn sunset sail with the season's table brought aboard. We cast off into the golden hour, the Douro glassy and the light low and warm, and toast the way the day asks to be toasted — a glass of Port, chocolate, blankets against the chill, and the stories of the river as the city lights come up. It's unhurried and genuinely Portuguese, the opposite of a packed November square.
When November is the right time to sail
People assume sailing is a summer thing. November in Porto often disagrees. The light is at its most beautiful, the river is quiet, the Atlantic swell is lower in the estuary than you'd expect on calm days, and St Martin's summer regularly delivers an afternoon that feels borrowed from September. We sail year-round when conditions are safe — and if the weather turns, you reschedule or we refund, always.
Make a plan of it
Whether you want a shared seat at sunset or the whole boat for a small group, São Martinho is a lovely excuse to get on the water before winter. Tell us you'd like the São Martinho sailing when you book the sunset cruise, and we'll bring the autumn toast aboard.
