Port Wine & Chocolate, Tasted on the Water

Port wine was born a few hundred metres from where we cast off — in the cellars of Gaia, just across the river. So there is a lovely logic to tasting it out on the water it came from, glass in hand, the Douro sliding past and a square of dark chocolate melting slowly on your tongue. This is our wine & chocolate tasting on board, and it is one of the most quietly indulgent things you can do in Porto.

Why Port and chocolate belong on the river

Port is Porto's gift to the world — a fortified wine with the depth to stand beside rich food and the sweetness to finish a meal. Chocolate is its natural partner: the two share body, warmth and a long finish, and each makes the other taste better. Do it on a sailboat, unhurried, with the bridges and cellars in view, and the pairing stops being a tasting and starts being a memory.

A flight from white to vintage

Port isn't one wine but a whole spectrum, and that is exactly what we pour — a guided flight that travels from pale and crisp to deep and dark. You'll usually taste a chilled white port to open, a rosé for something fresh and fruity, an amber tawny with its notes of nut, fig and caramel, and a ruby or reserve that arrives full of red fruit and spice. We talk you through each glass — where it comes from, how it's made, and what to look for — so you leave knowing your tawny from your ruby.

The magic is in the contrast: the same grapes, the same river, yet a glass of white port and a glass of aged tawny could hardly taste more different. Watching that journey unfold — pale gold to deep amber — is half the pleasure.

The pairings

We match each style to a chocolate that brings out its best. Chilled white port loves a bright, milk-chocolate praline; the rosé plays off red-fruit and caramel notes; the tawny sits beautifully with darker, nuttier chocolate and a little sea salt; and the ruby or reserve meets a deep 70% dark head on. Between glasses there is water and a moment to reset the palate — this is meant to be savoured, not rushed.

Private or shared — how it works

As a private experience

Book the whole sailboat and the tasting is just your party — a couple, a family, a group of friends, or something to mark an anniversary, a birthday or a proposal. You set the pace and we set the scene, pairing the tasting with our Daytime & Sunset cruise from Douro Marina so the light does its part too.

As a shared small-group sail

Prefer to join others? We also run the tasting on shared departures, kept to a maximum of ten guests, so it stays relaxed and personal — never a crowded tour boat. It's a sociable, easy way to discover Port if you're travelling solo or as a pair.

Because we tailor the format, dates and pairings to you, the simplest way to arrange it is a quick message. Tell us your group size, your dates and whether you'd like it private or shared, and we'll do the rest.

Good to know

  • It's guided, not just poured — the crew walks you through every glass, at a pace that suits the table.
  • Comfort included — proper seating, shade, and on cooler evenings, blankets for the golden hour.
  • Not only sweet — if you'd rather keep it light, we can open with Porto's favourite aperitif, a Port tonic, before the tasting.
  • Special occasions welcome — tell us in advance and we'll help set the scene for celebrations.

Frequently asked questions

What ports are in the tasting?

A guided flight across the Port spectrum — typically a chilled white, a rosé, an amber tawny and a deep ruby or reserve — so you taste how the wine travels from crisp and citrusy to rich and chocolatey. We explain each glass as you go.

Can I do it privately or as a shared trip?

Both. Add the tasting to a private charter — just your party, your pace — or join a shared small-group sail with a maximum of ten guests. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll arrange the format and date that suits you.

How do I book?

The quickest way is a WhatsApp message to +351 914 598 216. Tell us your dates, group size and whether you'd like it private or shared, and we'll set it up — usually paired with our Daytime & Sunset cruise from Douro Marina.

Is chocolate really a good match for Port?

Yes — it's one of the classic pairings. The sweetness and body of Port stand up to dark chocolate beautifully, while lighter styles play off milk chocolate, caramel and red fruit. On the water, with the Douro sliding past, it's hard to beat.
