What to Wear on an Autumn Sail in Porto
The single most common question we get once the summer heat fades: what should I wear? The short answer for an autumn sail in Porto is layers, flat shoes, and something that stops the wind. The slightly longer answer is below — nothing complicated, just the handful of things that turn a good afternoon on the water into a great one.
Dress in layers
On the river it's usually a few degrees cooler than in the city, and the breeze makes it feel cooler still — then the sun comes out and you're peeling a layer off. A t-shirt or light top, a jumper or fleece, and a windproof or light waterproof jacket on top covers almost any autumn afternoon. You can always take a layer off; you can't add one you left at home.
Shoes that like a deck
Flat, non-slip shoes are the one real rule. Trainers or boat shoes are perfect; light-coloured soles are kindest to the deck. Leave the heels and anything with a hard black sole at home. In warm spells plenty of guests sail barefoot once we're underway, which is part of the pleasure.
Sun and water, even in November
Autumn sun off the water is sneakier than summer sun — the glare comes up off the river. Sunglasses earn their place, and a little sunscreen on a bright day doesn't go amiss. A small hat is nice at anchor; just something that won't blow off under sail.
Small things that make a difference
A few extras we're always glad guests bring: a hair tie if yours is long (the breeze is real), a light scarf or buff for the sunset chill, and your phone or camera for the golden hour — the light in autumn is the best of the year. We keep blankets aboard, so you don't need to bring your own.
What you can leave behind
No need for formal clothes, sailing gear or anything technical — this is a relaxed trip, not a regatta. And don't overthink it: if the forecast turns genuinely unfriendly we don't sail, so you'll never be out there under-dressed for a storm. Book, dress in a couple of easy layers, and let us handle the rest.
