Most people who step aboard with us have never sailed a day in their life — and by the time we turn for home, they've trimmed a sail, held a course and felt the boat lean into the wind. That's the whole idea behind our Sailing Baptism: not a cruise you watch from a cushion, but a proper first taste of sailing, out on the Atlantic off Porto, with a skipper who teaches you everything as you go.
What a "Sailing Baptism" actually is
A baptism — batismo de vela in Portuguese — is the sailing world's name for your very first time genuinely working a boat under sail. No experience, no theory homework, no licence. You show up curious, and the sea does the rest.
From the moment we clear the marina, your skipper explains what's happening in plain language: how the wind moves the boat, what the sails are doing, why we lean, and what all those ropes are actually for. Then, when you're ready, they hand the jobs over to you. You can throw yourself into every manoeuvre or sit back and take it in — both are fine. This is hands-on sailing at your own pace.
The three ways to do it
We run the baptism in three lengths, so you can dip a toe in or spend the whole day out. All of them start the same way — beginners welcome, training on board.
2 hours — the classic baptism · €300
Our most popular option and the perfect introduction. In two hours we cast off from Douro Marina and head straight out to the sea — we open the sails right at the mouth of the ocean and spend the whole experience out on the Atlantic, with you hands-on at the sails and the helm. It's plenty of time to feel the boat come alive under sail and understand what sailing is really about — priced at €300 for the boat, for you and your group.
4 hours — baptism & a swim
The same hands-on start, with room to breathe. With four hours we can sail further along the coast and drop anchor somewhere calm for a swim stop straight off the boat — a dive into the Atlantic, a drift in the water, then sails up again for the way home. It's the sweet spot for anyone who wants the sailing and a proper pause in the middle.
Full day — in the live-aboard spirit
For the truly hooked, we run full-day trips in a relaxed live-aboard spirit: a whole day given over to the sea, with time to sail properly, eat on board, swim, and settle into the slow rhythm of life afloat. It's the closest thing to running away to sea — for a day. Ask us and we'll tailor the route and the timing to you.
What you'll actually do on board
This isn't a sit-and-watch cruise. Over the sail your skipper will walk you through — and then let you try — the real jobs of sailing:
- Read the wind. Learn to spot where it's coming from and how the boat answers when it shifts.
- Trim the sails. Haul in and ease out the sheets to catch the wind properly and keep the boat moving sweetly.
- Take the helm. Hands on the wheel, eyes on the horizon — hold a course and feel the boat respond to you.
- Understand the boat. The names, the safety basics, and why sailors do things the way they do.
Do all of it, or just the bits that appeal. Nobody is put on the spot, and there's always a comfortable seat and a cold drink waiting when you'd rather just watch Porto go by.

We leave Douro Marina in Afurada and head straight out to the sea, opening the sails right at the mouth of the ocean and staying out on the open Atlantic for the whole experience. Out there the water opens up, the wind is steady and clean, and there's nothing between you and the horizon — the best possible classroom for your first sail.

Tips from the crew
- Soft soles or bare feet. Leave hard heels ashore — decks are happiest with soft shoes or none at all.
- Bring a light layer. The Atlantic breeze is cooler than the shore, even in August. A windproof top makes a difference.
- Sun sense. Sunglasses, a hat and sun cream — the glare off the water is no joke on a bright day.
- Doing the 4-hour or full day? Pack a swimsuit and towel. The swim stop is the highlight for most people.
- Ask questions. Curiosity is the best way to learn fast — your skipper loves teaching, so make the most of it.

Do I need any sailing experience?
None at all. The Sailing Baptism is designed for complete beginners. Your skipper teaches you everything on board, step by step — how the sails work, how to trim them and how to steer. You do as much or as little of the hands-on sailing as you like.
How long is it and how much does it cost?
The standard baptism lasts about 2 hours and costs €300 for the boat, for you and your small group. There's also a 4-hour version with a swim stop, and full-day trips in a relaxed live-aboard spirit — ask us for full-day pricing when you book.
Will I actually get to steer and handle the sails?
Yes — that's the whole point. Once we're on open water the skipper hands you real jobs: trimming the sails as the wind shifts and taking the helm to hold a course. It's genuine hands-on sailing, not a sightseeing cruise where you only watch.
